Supermajority Applauds Historic Vice President Nomination of Kamala Harris, the Country’s First Woman of Color Nominated to the Position

“Today is a historic and joyous day. Never before has a woman of color been selected as a vice presidential candidate and Supermajority is thrilled to congratulate Senator Harris. Senator Harris has a long and impressive record of standing up for women and families. She has been a tireless advocate for reproductive freedom, paid family leave, reducing the maternal mortality rate, and closing the racial inequality gap in a number of areas. 

As a United States Senator since 2016, Kamala Harris has served as one of the most high profile Black elected officials and one of the most high profile Indian-American elected officials in the United States. She was only the second-ever Black woman to be elected Senator and the first Indian-American woman. She was also the first Black woman in California history to be elected both District Attorney and Attorney General. This past year, she became only the second Black woman to run for U.S. president. 

We’re excited to see the Biden-Harris ticket put forth policies that will begin to heal our nation after the disastrous, harmful, and shameful presidency of Donald Trump. We look forward to seeing Senator Harris not only continue to advocate for the issues that affect and matter most to women, particularly women of color, but also working with Joe Biden to develop policies that will put women and their families first.

As we approach the centennial of women receiving the right to vote it is more important than ever to remember that women make up the majority of voters and will be the deciders in this election. This is a historic moment for all women, but especially Black women, who have been the base of the Democratic Party since earning the right to vote, have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Our recent research on low propensity women of color voters shows that their decision to vote in the 2020 election hinged largely on Biden’s VP selection as they wanted a VP who was a woman of color, who would be an equal partner to Biden, and who would bring energy to this election. 

With Kamala Harris on the ticket, we are one step closer to having our voices represented at the highest levels of government. We could not be more proud.” 

Supermajority was one of the first groups to call for Joe Biden to pick a woman to serve as his vice president, running a petition and joining a coalition of women’s groups in a public letter urging him to do so.
