Supermajority’s Amanda Brown Lierman on President Biden’s Student Loan Debt Announcement

Washington, D.C. – In response to President Biden’s announcement today that the federal government will forgive $10,000 in student debt for borrowers who make less than $125,000 per year and extend the student loan payment pause through Dec. 31, 2022, Supermajority Executive Director Amanda Brown Lierman issued the following statement:

“President Biden’s announcement today is a step in the right direction, but it should be the first step to address the magnitude of the student debt loan crisis. This is a women’s equality issue; two thirds of student loan debt is held by women. Women, especially women of color, are struggling to survive and support their loved ones under the sheer financial weight of their debt. We celebrate the much-needed relief this announcement will provide to millions — and we celebrate the delivery of the campaign promise made by President Biden and the efforts of organizers and activists who advocated for this progress.

“But we also continue the work. Until all student loans are forgiven, there is still unfinished business, and we will continue to work with the administration to ensure that our vision for racial and gender equity is fully realized.”
