Supermajority’s Statement on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Replacement

Plan to Engage Women Launches Today in Several States Where Women are Suffering

New York, NY – Today, Supermajority released the following statement on the announcement of President Donald Trump’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court to replace the late Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“For six months, the president has failed to address the coronavirus, leading to more than 200,000 deaths, with no end in sight. Instead of addressing the largest health crisis in our lifetimes, he is playing politics with our lives and rushing to appoint a Supreme Court justice, just weeks before the national election. He has spent his entire presidency trying to overturn the Affordable Care Act, ending protections for people with preexisting conditions, and now he is banking on a new Supreme Court justice to do this for him.

Even though the American people overwhelmingly support waiting to bring another justice forward until the presidential election is decided and the winner is sworn in, President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are determined to rush through a lifetime appointment. They have hand-picked Amy Coney Barrett, a conservative judge whose record and public statements show she will put an end to the Affordable Care Act, putting health care coverage for tens of millions of people at risk, including the seven million Americans who have had the COVID virus — and unfortunately that number is only growing.

The confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett would also mean the end of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that has protected the right of people to make their own decisions about their pregnancies for more than forty years. And we have serious concerns about her record on racial justice and LGBTQ rights.

Republicans, specifically Senator Mitch McConnell, must postpone this appointment until every American’s vote is counted and the winner of this presidential election is sworn in in January. Rushing this appointment blatantly ignores the voices of the people and disrespects our democracy.”
