Virgina Election Recap

Waking up to the Virginia election results this morning was difficult. We didn’t get the outcomes we worked hard for. It’s disappointing.

But at the same time, I am hopeful. I am hopeful because of this community and our power to organize for the future where the majority rules.

Here’s the thing. Despite what political pundits and talking heads might be saying, the outcome of the Virginia election simply isn’t a prediction of future defeat. It does confirm what we already know — that Trump’s legacy is alive and well. And that as we collectively begin to heal from his presidency, we still have so much work to do.

Across the country, abortion access and voting rights are being methodically stripped away. The progress hard won by our mothers, grandmothers, and aunties is on the line. But in 2020, we proved that a multiracial coalition of women voting together can change the course of history. And we can do it again and again — for as long as it takes.

Women are the supermajority of voters in America. And that means we are already powerful enough to call the shots. When we do, we bring ourselves closer to a world where our lives, bodies, work, and families are valued. A world where our government represents us. A world where those closest to the pain are the ones leading us toward innovative and progressive solutions. A world where we’re truly, fully, and finally equal.

That’s Supermajority’s vision for the future, a vision we know you share.

And while that vision might feel harder to see on days when we experience setbacks, I’m always encouraged by women and our ability to take meaningful action that brings us closer to that vision. As you read this email, Congress is negotiating what stays and what goes in President Biden’s Build Back Better Agenda. Every Member of Congress needs to hear from women voters so we can get the support we need – affordable child care, the child tax credit, universal preschool, paid family leave, action on climate change, and more.

I want to thank the Supermajority volunteers who called, texted, knocked on doors, and worked so hard to win these races and secure a better future for women. I also want to celebrate the historic wins for women and women of color across the country yesterday — from Michelle Wu in Boston, to Shontel Brown in Ohio, to Shahana Hanif in New York City, to Ellen Park and Shama Haider who are the first Asian or Pacific Islander women to ever be elected to New Jersey’s Legislature. Women are the supermajority of voters and when we work together, we’re unstoppable.
